Our little pumpkin turned ONE this weekend! It seems like it wasn’t that long ago that we were bringing him home from the hospital. Now he’s running around like a little boy and it’s just so crazy.
We celebrated his birthday with Nana & Pawpaw on Saturday so they could have some quality time with him. His actual party is not for a couple weeks but they wanted him to open his presents from them closer to his actual birthday. Rhett is super in to the vacuum so when they asked what he wanted, we suggested a kid vacuum. He loved it! Coupled with some pots and pans for stirring (he’s all about stirring these days) and he was in hog heaven.
Uncle Grant & Aunt Taylor came to visit him on his birthday 🙂
Sunday, we let him try birthday cake for the first time at our friend’s Super Bowl Party. Safe to say he loved it! Hopefully he will remember how much he likes it when I’m trying to get him to eat his smash cake at his party.
Seriously Friday just snuck right up on me! It’s time for Friday favorites here with Erika, Andrea, and Narci.
First off is this new book “Grace Not Perfection” by Emily Ley. Normally, I gravitate towards mysteries or other fiction type books, but this one is so well written and easy to get in to. I love the practicality of the tasks she gives you to do as well as the space to write it all down in the book itself.
We had a final girls night (sounds so ominous) with our friend Kristen before she left on her next assignment travel nursing. She is off to Washington and we sure will miss her! But I’m jealous of all the delicious coffee she will be surrounded by in Seattle.
Play dates.. although they are never quite long enough, they sure are fun and we had three this week. One with our cousin, another with some friends, and one with Rhett’s first girlfriend j/k 🙂
Is it bad to tell a non favorite from this week on Friday Favorites? A non favorite of mine is the fact that my child has been taking really short afternoon naps.. Super annoying. Clearly I need to consult my notes on sleep training again because this is not fun! Good thing this kid is pretty cute and makes up for it.
That’s it for Friday Favorites! I get to go out to dinner with some of my girls tonight after we all get our babies down and man am I pumped for some spinach dip and chips 🙂
This weekend was so nice to just relax and hang out with my little family. Brian brought home burgers on Friday night from a quaint little place called Hatfield’s Hamburgers. I have never been in person, but the burger was great! I want to go in next time and try the bbq. Any hole in the wall that shows Andy Griffith during dinner is my kind of place.
Saturday we lounged around the house until after RBB’s first nap when we hit the gym together. That evening I made homemade pizza (and forgot to take a pic) and we had some friends over for dinner. Did you know that you could make pizza dough in your Vitamix? Me either, but it was super easy and turned out well.
We introduced Rhett to cow’s milk this weekend since he is almost one. He liked it ok. My kid doesn’t drink anything all that well still so he mostly played with the sippy cup. Not exactly sure how to deal with that when it comes time to wean him..
Like I said, playing with his sippy cups.. If anyone has any tips, I’m all ears on how to get him to drink milk, water or even eat more in general. He is just not super interested in it although I give him tons of opportunities to eat and drink.
On Monday, Rhett and I both kind of came down with the sniffles so we are trying to fight off whatever this is. Nobody’s got time for sickness around here! That’s a wrap on our weekend.
Yay for Friday! Today I’m linking up with Erica, Andrea, and Narci for Friday Favorites.
First up, this..
Pretty sure coffee could be a part of every Friday Favorite for all time. I’m a big fan and have to limit my intake to two cups a day. Which leads me to this..
Shirt from the Wild & Free project that is on sale right now and 25% of the proceeds go to support the fight against pediatric cancer. Win-win for me! Gohere if you want to learn more and order your own!
Also, I’ve been loving this colder weather lately and walks with my little bears. I am not one of those people who likes the fair winters. Hello, it’s winter and by jingle it needs to feel like winter! Last winter was so warm it was ridiculous. It probably didn’t help that I was super pregnant and hot all the time, but I digress.
Speaking of bears.. I found this adorable guy at TJ Maxx and could not say no since he was half off! I looked like a crazy mom with this giant bear on one hip and baby on the other. Safe to say Rhett likes his birthday present though 🙂
PS: If you didn’t know this about me, I’m a big old movie fan. Usually I’ll have TCM on when I’m cooking or while Rhett is eating his lunch. It’s nice to have some noise on in the background sometimes. Anyways, I watched a “new” old movie (made in 1952) the other day that I really enjoyed called Bend of the River with Jimmy Stewart and Rock Hudson. If you like old movies, you should check it out!
Well that’s it for Friday Favorites. Hope you all have a fabulous weekend and enjoy the chilly weather!
Guys, pretend it’s Wednesday, ok? Because this post did not make it up yesterday..
Today I’m linking up with Shay, Sheaffer, and Mel for What’s Up Wednesday where we answer these questions:
What we’re eating this week..
Turkey Burgers, Chicken Alfredo, and a failed Thai chicken recipe.. let’s not get into that one. I never can make good Thai food. I just need to stick to going to my favorite Thai restaurant and leave it at that rather than wasting all the money buying the random ingredients needed for the Thai food.
What I’m reminiscing about..
This time last year when I was waiting for RBB to arrive. I was due on January 31st, but he didn’t want to come until February. It was a sweet time of waiting but also hard when everything about a new baby is so exciting!
What I’m loving..
My new scarf from my sister! I’ve wanted one of these for a while because they looked like the perfect nursing cover too. Thanks Hay 🙂
What we’ve been up to..
Party planning galore for Rhett’s Beary First Birthday.. betcha can guess my theme!
What I’ve been dreading..
One year old shots. Ugh I hate them! I know they are necessary, but I feel terrible when he has to get them.
What I’m working on..
A giant bear cut out for Rhett’s party? Basically anything party related is what I’m working on. I do realize that it’s silly to go to so much trouble for a 1 year old, but I just love planning parties. It invigorates me!
What I’m excited about..
See above 🙂
What I’m watching/reading..
I’m wrapped up in an ebook right now called Caroline Bingley: A Continuation of Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice which obviously was not written by Jane Austen, but it’s really good! I’ve also started The Selection by Keira Cass, but can’t seem to get into that until I finish reading about Caroline Bingley.
What I’m listening to..
I’ve been listening to Bethel’s cd “You Make Me Brave.” Fun fact for you all, I went to my senior prom with the guy who is now the drummer for Bethel. You can see him in this video of my favorite song off the album, “Anchor.” Also, Bing Crosby. I love Bing. Especially his Irish tunes like “MacNamara’s Band” since McNamara is my maiden name.
What I’m wearing..
Currently living in these leggings.. They work for lounging, going for a walk, going to the gym, or going out. My poor husband would probably like to see me in something other than athleisure these days haha.
What I’m doing this weekend..
We have dinner at my friend’s house on Friday night, nothing planned for Saturday (yay) and a big event at my church on Sunday.
What I’m looking forward to next month..
Rhett’s birthday party, seeing our families, and Valentine’s Day of course! Hmm which reminds me I need to decorate for Valentines Day.
What else is new?
I got a new planner from Plum Paper, and I’m really excited to see how it compares to my Erin Condren. I’ll have to do a post comparing the two planners when I really start to use it. We’ve had a couple of really nice days here so we’ve been taking Rhett to the park. It has been so fun! He has been loving the swing and really just being outside with Bear.
I’m linking up with Erika, Narci, andAndreatoday for my first Friday Favorites. Yay for the new year and new blog posts!
First off is these lettuce wraps from Damn Delicious. I pretty much love all of her recipes, but this one didn’t even make it into the lettuce wrap half the time since I was eating it by the spoonful. It’s so good and you should make them!
Next would have to be this..
My inlaws came for a visit this past weekend and helped me prep for Rhett’s first birthday. Sharon is a fantastic seamstress and was showing Rhett some tricks with the sewing machine. I could not have made all the stuff she helped me with on my own so I’m definitely grateful for her help. Now I just need to get to work cutting and crafting and painting some other things around here for the party.
We found this awesome light up ball in the Target dollar section. Technically, it was three dollars, but the entertainment value with these two was well worth the three bucks!
They have been playing so well together these days. It is really fun and almost like having another “person” around since Rhett loves Bear so much. I am so thankful that he is a gentle pup even when Rhett is “brushing” him aka hitting him with the dog hair brush. Bless Bear! He is the best!
Lastly, I might have found a couple things at the Dillard’s New Year sale including this ginormous pursethat I love! It’s perfect for stashing everything and lets me use my new Tote Savvy insert from my mom. Rhett asked for it for Christmas for his diaper bag you know 😉 I love it! I was amazed at how much fit in the mini insert. Plus, I just take that part out if I’m going somewhere without Rhett and don’t have to switch to a different purse if I don’t want to.
That’s it for this week! We’ve got a busy weekend planned with two birthday parties on Saturday and one of which I’m making the cake and smash cake so pray those turn out well 😉 Happy Friday everyone!
When Rhett was about 6 months, Brian and I were pretty tired parents. I was still nursing Rhett through the night whenever he woke up which was about 2-3 times a night. I know that’s not terrible compared to some babies, but I was just over it. So then I read some about sleep training and talked to some friends and tried to implement pieces of what they told me to do, but never quite had it all together.
Then I heard about a sleep trainer that some friends had used, and since we were desperate, Brian and I both agreed to give her a shot. I’ll be really honest here, after meeting with her I was disappointed. It seemed like we were doing everything wrong and that is sometimes hard to hear. I also didn’t want to hear about how I needed to get R on a consistent nap schedule so he would sleep better at night. I liked my freedom of doing what I wanted and pushing his naps to whenever was convenient for me. But I decided to take her advice and give it a shot.
We started out trying to stick to her schedule, but some things were just not going to work for us like a 7 pm bed time when Brian doesn’t get home until after 6 pm every night or a 6 am wake up when mama does not want to start her day that early. After getting Rhett on a schedule that works for us and sticking to it, I’m happy to say it works! He has been sleeping through the night, and I couldn’t be more proud of him and thankful for 8 hours of continuous sleep! He takes two naps a day and although he still cries some before going to sleep, it’s so much better than it used to be! I’ll outline his basic schedule below:
RBB’s Sleep Schedule
Wake up any time in between 6:45 am – 7:15 am Wake up and nurse Breakfast Go to the gym or play at the house
Go back down any time in between 9:30 am – 10:00 am Nurse Rhett with lights on while awake Read a book Put Rhett in his crib to put himself to sleep (usually still takes about 10 minutes to fall asleep)
Wake up any time between 11:00 am – 12:30 pm Wake up and eat a snack or lunch if it is after 12 depending on how long his nap went Run any errands or play around the house after lunch
Go back down any time between 2:30 pm – 3:00 pm Sometimes I’ll nurse him again before this nap if he didn’t eat very much for lunch, because he tends to sleep longer if he is more full. Read a book, change diaper, and put him in the crib awake
Wake up any time between 4:00 pm – 5:00 pm Eat a snack while mom preps dinner Play until Brian gets home around 6 pm, nurse, and then eat dinner
Bed time routine starts at 6:45 pm or 7:00 pm with bath time Nurse before bed with lights on and Rhett fully awake Pass off to Dad for Bible reading and prayer before putting Rhett in his crib fully awake. He will sometimes cry for a little bit and other times not even cry and put himself right to sleep. It’s amazing!
Ok so this is what works for us. I really think you have to find what works for you, but I loved how the sleep lady gave us a full schedule of this is what you need to do and stick to. It was easy for me to read books and say “no, that doesn’t apply” or “I don’t like that,” but when someone comes to your home and tells you exactly what you need to do, it’s harder to say no to those suggestions.
Some other suggestions she had:
make the room pitch black
keep the air between 71 degrees and 73 degrees
3 hours wake time between naps (don’t go longer than 4 hours or risk over tiredness)
less than a 45 minute nap doesn’t count
do a dramatic wake up (lights on, windows open, sound machine off) after every nap/sleep
use a loud sound machine (Marpac) with a constant white noise
get an air purifier
Gotta tell you we didn’t do all of those. I try to stick to what we can, but I wasn’t buying more black out curtains to make the room pitch black during the day after spending too much money on the PBK ones I had to have. Also, after 5 consecutive days of him waking up after 35 minutes or so into his afternoon nap, I gave up on making him go back down to hit the 45 minute mark. It just wasn’t working. And once I stopped stressing that 45 minutes, he naturally fell into a routine of sleeping more in the afternoon so it all worked out anyways 🙂
Once again, this is what worked for us. I’m so glad I gave up my freedom of doing what I wanted and stuck to the schedule, because now I reap the benefits of sleeping through the night. It is life changing for me! I hope some of these tips might help you too.
So let me start this post by saying this is not part of my “No Sugar January” life right now. But I did make this pie quite a bit over the holidays, and it’s always a hit. This is my Aunt Leslie’s recipe that has been in our family for years. You know the old cook books that were typed by hand and sold at your church fundraisers with recipes from all the ladies at the church? This recipe is in that book and yes, I stole my grandma’s church cook book like that since no one sells them anymore 😉
And excuse my picture quality as I had to use a candid I snapped to send to the family, because I do not have the self control to make a chocolate pie and not eat it myself in No Sugar January.
1 nine inch unbaked pie shell
3.5 tbsp cocoa
2 eggs beaten
1 tsp vanilla
1.5 cups sugar
1/4 cup butter, melted
1 can evaporated milk
Melt butter in a large bowl and mix in sugar. Once it is thoroughly mixed, mix in the cocoa until the mixture is smooth.
Add eggs and vanilla and lastly the evaporated milk.
Pour into the unbaked pie shell and bake at 350 degrees for 35-45 minutes until the pies are mostly set. They will not completely set up, but you don’t want them to be sloshy
At my gym, they have a bomb shake called the Candy Bar Crunch (or something like that). Anyways, it costs like $6, and I can’t handle paying that for a protein shake knowing that I have good protein and a Vitamix at home. So I decided to make it myself and have pretty much come up with the perfect knock off recipe which is perfect for the days that you don’t really want to eat leftovers for lunch. Win-win for this mama!
1 tbsp peanut butter
1 scoop BSN Syntha-6 Chocolate Milkshake protein powder
1 cup milk (could sub coconut or almond milk)
1 tsp caramel ice cream topping (trust me you need this)
1/3 cup old fashioned oats
4 ice cups
Blend in your blender, Vitamix, Ninja, etc. until smooth
This shake is definitely a meal replacement shake coming in at 545 calories, so don’t drink it just as a snack unless you are trying for gains 🙂
Gap Pajamas. Does anyone else have this problem where they are too tall for normal pajama pants? Welcome to my world. I literally had my mother in law sew different fabric on the hem of a pair of Ralph Lauren jammies because I wanted to wear them so badly, but they were high waters on me. I bought these for myself this Christmas and they are so soft! They feel kind of like silk, and oh so soft! I might have bought another pair with some Christmas money, because I loved them so much!
Soma Nursing Bras. On my motherhood journey, I have tried a lot of different options for nursing bras. These are my all time favorite! They usually run a 2 for $60 deal and that is the time to buy! They have held up well and should last me through another kid for sure. The only bad thing is that they do not offer a black option. Come on Soma, step up your game here.
Jack Black Energizing Face Buff. I know this is a product for men, but I love it! Its a deep scrub that really seems to clean the pores out. I’m not a face expert by any means, but my face is so soft after a good scrub with this!
Norwex Kitchen Cloths. Disclaimer, I do not sell these, but I sure love them! I have black quartz counter tops that I used to clean with Method spray cleaner and then go back over with a shiner coat to prevent streaks. I dreaded cleaning my counters and was kind of a grinch on what or who I let eat on them. My friend started selling these cloths, and I was skeptical. She let me try them on my counters, and I was sold! It cuts my time in half since I don’t have to go over the counters twice! And these cloths do a great job on my stovetop, cabinets, stainless steel fridge, etc. I really do love them!
Bath and Body Candles. I know this is a no brainer.. these candles have been around forever, but I’ve always been a Yankee Candle girl. Until lately that is. I stocked up on a good sale at Bath and Body and now love them! I’m particularly all about the Winter scent (soaps, wallflowers, candles) and Sweater Weather and Flannel and I could go on and on. Plus they are always on sale and you can use coupons! win win
Sigma Flat Kabuki Brush. Ok technically I didn’t buy this one. I received this brush from my girlfriend for my birthday. I’m not sure I would have forked over the money to buy it myself, but it is so nice! I love how evenly it applies my foundation and how easy it was to use. I’m not super great at makeup, but this was an easy trick for me to get smooth coverage every day.
Walmart Pick Up. Not technically a product, but have you tried this?? It’s amazing! I discovered it when Rhett was young, and it was so clutch for me since Rhett hated (ok still hates) his car seat. I didn’t even have to take him out of the seat! I order my groceries on my app and then choose when I want to pick them up and they bring them to me. I don’t even have to leave my vehicle. You feel like you should be paying extra for this service, but it’s free and they don’t accept tips. I know it’s not available in all areas yet, but hopefully it will be soon.
Mrs. Meyer’s Iowa Pine Scent. My sister introduced me to Iowa Pine soap when I was visiting her back in October and I am obsessed. I normally am not a huge pine scent person, but this one is so light and crisp. It doesn’t overwhelm you and it makes washing dishes so much more delightful (ok bearable). Unfortunately, this is like egg nog and only available for a limited time in stores, but I stocked up so I can use this dish soap year round at my house.
